Strengthening Digital Skills

UZH promotes the use of data, digital tools and AI for both students and teaching staff.

Between 2021 and 2024, 23 new courses for students and 15 support services for teaching staff were created at UZH as part of the Strengthening Digital Skills in Teaching project. These courses teach digital skills in a practical, easily accessible and appropriate way. The four-year project is supported by the Swiss government.

The content ranges from data management and analysis to open science and the digital transformation of society. Since the launch of ChatGPT, courses have also been developed that focus on the use of AI tools in education, to support both teaching staff and students in their use of artificial intelligence.

From the start, the project had a strong focus on forming networks in the spirit of a community of practice. Experts from almost all faculties at UZH were involved. Exchanging knowledge in a way that goes beyond the bounds of faculties proved to be particularly valuable.

The project was successfully brought to an end in 2024 and has had a lasting impact. A large part of the teaching materials developed is still in use. Some formats have been integrated into the new Digital Skills minor program, while other courses will continue to be offered regularly thanks to alternative sources of funding. These are available on the website of the School for Transdisciplinary Studies. Most of the new courses and programs are open to students and teaching staff from various disciplines. Teaching staff also have access to support materials and insights resulting from the project via the Teaching Tools platform.
