Sustainability Statistics
In 2024, UZH’s energy demand was primarily covered through electricity and district heating. In a long-term comparison, a decoupling between UZH’s number of students and its energy demand becomes apparent: since 1980, the number of students has increased significantly more than the energy demand. Between 2020 and 2024, the energy demand decreased despite the rising number of students. Further relevant figures regarding UZH’s sustainability can be found in the interactive diagrams.
At the time of the editorial deadline for this report, the numbers for the year 2025 were not yet accessible. Consequenly, the numbers for the year 2024 are shown. The numbers for 2025 are available on the Sustainability Hub website from May 2026 onwards.
2018 is the base year for calculating the reduction path regarding climate neutrality. Information regarding the calculation method for the greenhouse gas emissions can be found in the Sustainability Report 2023/2024 of UZH (in german).
In comparison to 2018, UZH was able to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions in 2024. After a strong decrease of roughly half the emissions during the pandemic, the greenhouse gas emissions have been rising again since 2021. Consequently, UZH is currently working on further measures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
